Whenever you play a game of Starcraft 2 you must always be scouting.
It is best to scout first once your economy is up and running. This is usually when you reach about 10 supply. Then you can send out a worker to see what your opponent is going for.
It is very important to know what your opponent is up to. This especially goes for the later leagues like Diamond. That is because they like to throw curve balls. There are many cheap shots that you can take in Starcraft 2.
For example Terran players like to go for that early reaper rush. Reapers are fast units that take out buildings quickly with grenades. They are very good for taking out workers. Not to mention how sneaky they are because they can jump up and down cliffs.
If you were facing a Terran player and scouted an early barracks with a tech lab then you must be aware that he is going for reapers. So you would adapt your strategy to his in order to counter attack.
To me those are really the two major skills to get down which is scouting and counter attacking. Because after you have done them well then it would easy to finish them off and win the game.
But what if they wall off their base? Get an air unit like a Pheonix to hover around and clear the fog for a minute. It is really not that hard to figure out what they are going for. Be sure to also scout for expos and proxies.

I guess you need a guide if you want to play like a pro
I hate that they put each race in a different product, I want to play Zerg!
